Best Government Hashtag Campaign

When the District Department of Transportation started using the hashtag #parkingdirty in May 2014, it was intended as an educational effort. An early tweet featured a photo of officers patrolling on Segways and, naturally, adapted Chamillionaire lyrics: “We’re rolling… trying to catch them #parkingdirty.” When Twitter users in and outside the D.C. area jumped onboard, posting pictures of vehicles of all shapes and sizes blocking bike lanes, it became more of an enforcement tool. The $65 fine is a moderate disincentive, but the public shaming is probably the most effective piece of the campaign. After a series of targeted tweets, it seems like even UPS is getting better.
