Gray seals get a bad rap. Even in their fancy new digs on the National Zoo’s American Trail, the older pinnipeds are more content lazing in a corner than racing through water. So when 30-year-old seal Kara delivered a 35-pound female pup on Jan. 21, the first one born at the zoo in 23 years, the seal pool became fun again. Sorry, Bao Bao, but watching videos of this cutie learning to swim and playing with her fish (she won’t be on public view until later this spring) is much more fun than watching you sleep for hours on the Panda Cam.
