Black Thumbs Collective
A recent Washington City Paper poll found that only 2 percent of likely Democratic voters in Ward 8—and 0 percent in Ward 7—bike to work. That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, given that there are zero miles of bike lanes in Ward 8 and zero bike shops east of the Anacostia River. The Black Thumbs Collective is working to fill the vacuum and make biking a more viable option east of the river by providing free bicycle maintenance to commuters in wards 7 and 8. Like the free bike clinics west of the river that have allowed people to bike regularly without breaking the bank on tune-ups, the effort is a step toward lowering the barriers to cycling for all Washingtonians, regardless of income or geography.
