If you want a fancy doughnut, there are plenty of options. Right now, I find myself pining for the square-shaped PB&J at Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken. However, when I crave something simpler, but equally soul-satisfying, I head straight for Palena Coffee Shop. The stars of the bakery case are the yeast doughnuts with zesty lemon glaze, which dissolve in your mouth like a “Hot Now” Krispy Kreme round just off the conveyor belt. Pastry chef Aggie Chin only turns out 20 to 30 on weekdays and 40 to 50 on Saturdays and Sundays, so get there early if you want one—they go fast. I apologize in advance if I elbow you out of the way as I try to score one myself.
