Geoff Tracy
Busboys and Poets owner and failed mayoral hopeful Andy Shallal may be the most prominent restaurateur-turned-activist, but no one combines his business with disdain for his political opponents better than Geoff “Chef Geoff” Tracy, the owner of a string of eponymous D.C. area restaurants and the chairman of the District’s restaurant association. Tracy’s opposition to a proposed increase in the tipped minimum wage for restaurant employees drew a rowdy group of activists to crash a D.C. Council hearing, then launch a protest in front of Tracy’s restaurant complete with a clown meant to represent Tracy. Tracy fired off a letter to Councilmember Vincent Orange demanding that the clown protesters face unspecified “repercussions.” Obviously, Tracy wrote, they had never even been to his restaurants.
