The golden rule in business is that the customer is always right. For Gillian Clark, the chef-owner of Silver Spring’s General Store, the customer can often not only be wrong, but annoying and idiotic to boot. After one too many run-ins, the irritated toque showed how grating she finds some patrons in a series of video skits with titles like “Obnoxious at the Counter,” “RIP Chivalry,” and “Strange Behavior in the Dining Room.” (The videos were on Clark’s YouTube channel late last year, but are now private. Dig around on the Internet to find them). Whether you believe she’s the D.C. area’s answer to the Soup Nazi or the voice for the millions of pissed off restaurant staffers, you have to admire Clark’s bravado. (Her landlord’s tax problems apparently forced the restaurant to close as this issue went to press; we hope to see him in a video soon.) Apparently, her golden rule is to call it like she sees it, whether you want to hear it or not.
