Best Jazz Recording Studio

Allyn Johnson’s basement
Allyn Johnson’s concerts are already a destination for jazz people in D.C. As if he needed to bolster his credentials as the baddest cat in town, the pianist has built another musical hot spot around himself, this one specifically for musicians. The downstairs of Johnson’s pretty Silver Spring split-level makes for an excellent recording space; it boasts a full production console, three soundproofed rooms to provide separation between musicians, Johnson’s piano and keyboard setups, and a modular booth for the drums (the walls of which each tenant has autographed). It’s his home, sure, but it’s all business.
