Comet Ping Pong’s booker Sasha Lord isn’t trying to make the family-friendly Chevy Chase pizza joint where she programs shows another Black Cat or Rock & Roll Hotel. Not exactly. Instead, for the last several years she’s stuck to a few important lanes: D.C.’s smartest and scuzziest indie rock bands (the Caribbean, Teen Mom, Lemuria); the vast garage-rock diaspora (Mikal Cronin, not long ago); the odd bit of gallery-scene crossover; and special shows deserving of a special room, like a Raincoats reunion concert and a secret warm-up gig by the Make-Up before the D.C. gospel yeh-yeh group played All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals in New Jersey and the U.K. Fittingly, and true to the spirit of the D.C. hardcore veterans who’ve made Comet their middle-age hang, the shows are all-ages. Buy your cool younger cousin some pizza; take him to his first show.
